Welcome to the April edition of our Kidsafe SA Prevention Matters Newsletter. As working from home becomes the new normal and with school holidays just around the corner, our safety focus this month is keeping children safe in and around the home.
Home Safety Checklist
Did you know that the most common location children get injured is in the home?
Young children are vulnerable to injuries as they begin to explore their environment because they are unable to recognise danger or take action to keep themselves safe. While it may not be possible to make your home completely safe at all times, you can take steps to reduce the risk of injury and make your home a safer place for children.
Some of the hazards you may not have thought about include:
- Are poisonous substances stored in their original container?
- Is everything you need kept close to the baby change table? It is important never to leave a baby unattended on a change table.
- Do you check toys regularly for damage or loose parts?
- Is your child’s play area separated from the driveway?

Button Batteries
Have you checked your home for button batteries? Button batteries are found in a number of common household items including remotes, watches and hearing aids. However, many are unaware of exactly how dangerous they can be. If swallowed, button batteries can cause serious injury or death. You can see what happens if a button battery is swallowed here.
If you think your child has swallowed or inserted a button battery, don’t wait for them to show symptoms. Call the Poisons Information Centre urgently for expert advice on what to do 24 hours, 7 days. Call 13 11 26.
