Back to school pedestrian safety

Term 1 is just around the corner but have you considered how your children will be getting to school? If your child walks or rides to school take the time to educate your children about roads and pedestrian safety:

  • Teach children to “stop, look, listen, think” before crossing the road
  • Teach children to use pedestrian crossings
  • Ensure children wear helmets and other protective gear e.g. knee pads when riding bikes, scooters or other wheeled devices
  • Hold young children’s hands when near traffic, especially when crossing the road

When is your child ready to walk to school alone?

There is no hard and fast rule about when children are ready to walk to school on their own however, some important thing to consider are:

  • The child’s individual physical, emotional and cognitive development
  • The distance to school
  • The difficultly of the route

As a parent or caregiver, it is important to remember that children do not have the same level of experience, knowledge or cognitive development as adults around roads, this places children at a greater risk of injury.

Have you checked your pool fence?

Our friends at Safetech Hardware Australia have established a handy pool maintenance reminder which allows you to register to receive reminders and useful resources to help you complete a home pool self assessment.
