Play Safety
The importance of play
Kidsafe SA encourages and recognises the importance of play for all children. Play can develop children’s physical strength, coordination, balance, social skills, risk management and problem solving skills. Every child has the right to play and to take positive risks in a hazard free environment.
Risk – Challenge vs Hazards
Play can offer children the opportunity to encounter and take acceptable risks in a challenging and controlled learning environment. Challenges and hazards are both risks. A challenge is something obvious to a child where he/she can determine their ability and decide whether to take that risk. Positive risk taking may have many benefits including self-assessments of ones own ability, improving confidence and building resilience in children. On the other hand, a hazard is something unseen or not obvious to a child that often results in injuries.
Our Playground Advisory Unit (PAU) encourages positive risk taking behaviors in a safe environment free of hazards.
